For many different reasons, more and more people these days are in some sort of long term relationship. Often it’s amongst young couples when one or both side of the relationship move away from home to go to college.

There are differing views on long term relationships, and whether they actually work or not. My personal opinion is that the vast majority do not work.

For the following example I will use a young male who was living at home with his parents. And before moving to college he spends all of his spare time with his girlfriend, the makings of a long distance relationship. They would decide to see each other in the holidays for example and carry on the relationship as normal as possible.

Unfortunately man is an animal; it’s all too tempting for young males to cheat when they’re away at college. Obviously during their time at college they shouldn’t be having sex with anyone else but after a few too many drinks at a party temptation can easily overcome loyalty.

It is normally the case that if a man thinks that he can get away with being unfaithful, then he probably will be, and a long term relationship is the perfect setting for this. Being in a long term relationship means that the chances of you discovering that your partner is cheating are low.

Another reason why long term relationships can be doomed is because people grow apart. Spending time away from you partner will meant that you both make new friends and get used to being without each other.

The only way that I can see a long distance relationship working out is if it is only for a short amount of time. It is most probably not going to work if you are going to be apart for several years.

If you’ve recently broke up with your partner because of a distance issue but they want to give things another go you should think long and hard about it. If the only reason you want to get back with your ex is because you don’t want to be on your own, think about how often you were alone the last time you were together.
